Lacy co-produced her debut CD Lovefeast with Jim Gallagher at the Gamble-Huff and Kajem/Victory studios in Philadelphia. The album's eclectic musical influences range through traditional Asian, African and Celtic music sources and result in a singular style inspired by the natural world. In "Song of Songs," Old Testament love poetry drifts through a heavenly arrangement of Arabic and Indian percussion, flute and keyboards. "Silverback," based on the life of gorilla researcher Dian Fossey, blends thundering drums and African percussion with ethereal sounds from a variety of sources: guitars, bass, synthesizers and the Rwandan gorillas themselves.

PRESS

"A host of multicultural influences come into play.... Similar in nature -- but not necessarily in style -- to singers like Ofra Haza, Sinead O'Connor and Enya... delicate and ethereal, with a molten core and a clear, strong delivery....hauntingly embracing; there's also a real sense of movement here, which may be due in part to her background as a dancer as well as a musician. You can almost feel a physical expression manifested in the turn of an instrument or a percussive rhythm."

- Carol Shutzbank, Big Shout

"Kate Bush/Tori Amos feel with an exotic Middle Eastern twist....
a sumptuous affair."

- a. d. amorosi, Philadelphia City Paper

"Full of the artful and ethereal sounds found on... albums ranging from those of Kate Bush to the Waterlillies', James' strength is drawn from her deft ability to create an inspired mood through her use of exotic rhythms and instruments."

- CMJ, "Certain Damage"

"[Kate] Bush's theatrical, Olde English-balladry style is a sometime inspiration... but so too are the tribal world beat percussive paens of Peter Gabriel and David Byrne."

- Jonathan Takiff, Philadelphia Daily News

"enough successes to make this very well-recorded disc worthy of a serious listen by those with open musical minds. When it's at its best, this disc takes some adventurous chances that rival the work of anyone working in these occasionally treacherous musical areas."

Frank Blank, Philadelphia City Paper

2007

Lacy created music for two out of of the three dances on this program. The sound score for the second piece, Oracle, is punctuated with moments of silence, alternating forboding and delicate electronic sounds with the sounds of the dancer's costumes. For the last work on the program, disSolve subMerge, manipulated voice recordings interweave within the electronic score, building to the incorporation of Steve Reich's 1965 voice manipulation It's Gonna Rain, Part II in the climactic section of the dance.
